Springfield Road
The Wheatley Homes site at the corner of London Road and Springfield Road is an exciting housing project designed by Collective Architecture in early design stages.
Landscape is integral to the design and success of the project. The combination of open space, play areas, allotments, SuDs and Rain Gardens will all add to the character.
Rain Gardens run parallel to Springfield Road, draining into a large SuDs (Sustainable Drainage System) area which the public will be encouraged to use as an open space where there is seating and planting.
A Rain Garden collects rainwater, temporarily stores and filters it before slowly releasing the water into the ground or into a SuDs. It will collect rain from roofs, pavements, roads or driveway and prevents flood runoff reaching local waterways.
The designed combination of planting, levels, and an engineered soil medium, help to retain stormwater and slowly filter pollutants carried by urban runoff.
Plant choice should focus on robust species which tolerate waterlogging and roadside pollutants including salt spray. A mix of evergreens and perennials will add interesting form, colour and create a biodiverse urban habitat for wildlife.
