The Ouseburn area of Newcastle upon Tyne is identified within 1NG’s Economic Masterplan as a key opportunity to form part of a cultural axis, linking with the creative areas in the universities and colleges of Newcastle and Gateshead.
The former Maynards Toffee Factory is a Victorian building, damaged by fire in the mid 1980s and was left as a two storey shell with the tallest remaining industrial chimney in the area.
TGP Landscape Architects were appointed as project landscape architects working closely with Xsite Architects and completed two commissions prior to novation to Brims, the principal contractor.
The design principles were to provide a robust, high quality, modern setting for the Toffee Factory that is attractive to the creative industries, attracts inward investment and appropriate for the Lower Ouseburn Valley Conservation Area.
The challenge for the landscape architect was to provide innovative public realm and private spaces in a very constrained site.
