North Yorkshire Parks & Historic Landscapes

TGP was commissioned by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council in September 2021 to carry out the landscape design and project management work on the redevelopment of Coronation Park within the Loftus Conservation Area.

Coronation Park was originally constructed in the 1930s, probably around 1936, which was the year of George VI Coronation. From a review of old maps, it appears that the park boundary and layout have changed little in that time, although it is now looking tired and in need of refurbishment.

The design of the external works acknowledges the location within a Conservation Area, the importance of the facility to the local community and the need to introduce new features which respond to the needs of the surrounding community while providing a high-quality area of open space and setting to the new Duncan Place Hub.

Our vision for Coronation Park is to transform it from a tired and run-down facility into a vibrant, multi-functional space for Loftus.

Project approach and deliverables:

  • Opening up the park to more users and providing level access to the new Duncan Place hub building via the car park and a tree-lined boulevard.
  • Creating a new feature wall and stepped access to the park from Zetland Road onto which will be projected images.
  • Creating new footpath circulation routes around the park.
  • Creating a grassed, multi-purpose events space.
  • Creating a new memorial garden with rose planting to reflect the original central feature of the Park.
  • Creating outdoor reading areas for the spillout from the local library which will be based at the adjacent community hub.
  • Providing improved lighting and CCTV.
  • Reinvigorating the existing planting and improving the biodiversity of the park.
  • Providing a 17-space car park and minibus drop-off area.
