The Herring Walk

9th October 2020

TGP are working with Coimhearsnachd Bharraidh agus Bhatarsaidh (Barra and Vatersay Community) Ltd to renovate the Herring Walk and establish safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists by improving the condition of the fragmented footways and challenging gradients that significantly constrain safe access and mobility.

The new design of Herring Walk will take in the historical heritage details along the walkway, with additional seating, heritage interpretation and public realm. A new footbridge will link to the Community Hub development and join the East and West sides of Castlebay. As this project moves forward, we hope to also include a direct link to the Ferry Terminal, for disembarking cyclists to avoid the steep hill, and to extend the path east to the Herring stations in Garrygall. The focus is on strengthening the connections between the two local centres and addresses place-making and stronger path networks, support for active travel and connected communities, improving the paths so they are inclusive to young, old and people with disabilities, and all types of wheeling.

The charity is supported by Places for Everyone, an active travel programme funded by Transport Scotland and managed by Sustrans.
