TGP were appointed by 360 Architecture to design a paved connection within a new campus proposal in the settlement of Stromness on Orkney.
TGP appraised the original architect’s concept of a continuous paved link between the campus and a former primary school to come up with a layout design for the paving. This included consideration of the façade elevation colours and material. The design evolution and choice of suitable paved material was also influenced by the surrounding townscape character in Stromness (including built features at the campus curtilage and Frankylin Road) and existing car park and road material (tarmac). A strong local feature is the natural stone wall with geometric patterns with the paved lanes or vennells often incorporating a linear path/strip. Taking account of these factors TGP looked at designing a paved strip, which would both compliment the proposed building materials and integrate with the historic streetscape character.
